How I baked emergency sugar cookies:
We ordered sugar cookies for my granddaughter’s first birthday (party favors) from a local bakery. The order was placed two weeks in advance with detailed description of the desired cookies. “Can you do it?”-I asked. “Not a problem.”-they said. I left them a picture for a guidance and a cookie cutter since they didn’t have one in a shape of the hot air balloon.
As it happened, being busy with all the party preparations, I forgot to pick them up. My husband came to the rescue and was able to get them right before the bakery closed. I opened the box with cookies and gasped – they looked nothing like the picture I left. As a matter of fact, they looked like a kindergarten project. Oh no! To make the long story short, I turned to my beloved Internet in search for sugar cookie recipe and royal icing tutorial. I baked and decorated all night with my laptop by my side. Oh, and the bakery didn’t return my cookie cutter but that didn’t stop this grandma. Cardboard and scissors worked just fine.
I must say, I was pretty pleased with the result given this was my very first attempt at both sugar cookies and royal icing. Not to mention that I only had one piping tip (#3) to work with. That’s the story. Then I was on a sugar cookie baking frenzy for a while and made these:
