Welcome to Thursday Favorite Things 197!
Hi, friends! Hope your Independence Day was monumental! Ours was on the quieter side as one of our kids couldn’t travel in for the celebration and another had to leave early so at the end it was just the four adults and Ava. We still had good food and some fireworks.
Husband and I finished the balcony project and we are happy how it turned out. It was a challenge to freshen up the big brown blob of the house without having to repaint it all. This week marks three years since we bought it, but that’s not why I’m choosing it for this week’s favorite.
As we pondered about how to improve the puke brown on poop brown on mud brown and not break the bank, we both agreed it should mimic the balconies of European houses we saw last year. German, in particular, for two reasons: my husband’s ancestors are German and I lived in Germany before I moved to the States.
Germany was the first country that offered me shelter, freedom, and independence when I had to flee my country (if this is your first time on my blog, you can read my story here). A small tribute to Germany are the flower pots (hopefully growing fast to droop over the boxes soon) and the blessing above the door, seen on almost every old German house.
There were so many to choose from. Ours, not translated literally, means: If you bring blessings, you’ll leave with blessings (you will also be blessed).
But there are also small touches designated to my country: Bosnian national flower, the lily flower on top of those swirly things (see red arrow), and the turquoise color which was an accent color of my childhood house representing the independence I had until it was taken away.
This house just went from brown on brown on brown to independence on independence on independence! And that’s why it’s my favorite for this week. It symbolizes everything I was, am, and will be. It means freedom, power, opportunity, and responsibility.
What does independence mean to you?
